April 2008
April 30
Our bullpen blew up once again and our offense provided too little, too late in a 7-4 loss at Philadelphia.
We’ll start a long winning streak tonight…

Upside Down
The 2008 season hasn’t been what we thought it would be. Our offense and bullpen has let us down the most. But in the end, I am going to stay optimistic. Life is a lot more fun and a lot easier if lived with optimism. So that is how I will/must look at my Padres too.
I have to believe that our bullpen will be very good, as it has been in the past. We have a couple of new guys and Trevor’s age will always be questioned, but I have faith that both Trevor and the rest of the ‘pen will be strong once again.
LF, CF, and 2nd base are huge question marks as well. Whether Hairston, PMac, Edmonds, and Iguchi improve, or Kevin Towers makes some changes, I will assume we will get better in those spots too. What’s the alternative? Assume the season is over before June? There may come a time when we have to look to 2009, but it is not now.
Yesterday’s game: Jake Peavy threw extremely well again, but was outpitched by Brandon Webb and the D-back bullpen. It was yet another frustrating loss where the offense had many chances, but failed to cash in.

Yabba Dabba Doo!!!
Pure joy. My Padres played another marathon game, but this time came out on the winning end, 8-7.
Tadahito Iguchi got ahold of one and ended the game, and a 5 game losing streak, with his walk-off HR in the bottom of the 13th inning. It was the Pads 3rd game of at least 13 innings in the last 10 days.
I didn’t get to watch the game because they showed the Yankee game instead, but I did get to listen to Jerry and Ted on the radio via internet. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the guys. Ted’s optimism was refreshing and Jerry is the best.
I was expecting the worst the whole time, but Glendon Rusch was great in 4 scoreless innings of relief and the struggling Tadahito took the high fastball deep to impart great joy in Padreland everywhere. It was just one win, but it was still sweet. It was nice to know we could win after all.
This now sets up an important game today. We can get some great momentum going for our road trip to the east coast and get ourselves within shouting distance of the D-backs. And we have Jake Peavy, who received his Cy Young Award yesterday, on the bump. Unfortunately, we will be facing Brandon Webb. It is a showdown of the last two CY winners. I can’t wait.
Go Padres!!!

Go Chargers!

The NFL Draft begins today. Although the Chargers have few picks, barring any trades, it will be an exciting day. We need an OT and CB, but I have complete trust in AJ Smith’s drafting genius, so I will be positive with whatever we end up getting.
We do have a 1st round pick (#27), but we traded our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks last year for Chris Chambers and to move up for Eric Weddle…more than worth it.
Just Keeping the Faith
I am not going to give up on the season on April 26. The team looks really bad, save for its starting pitching; but it is too early to say for sure.
We are 8.5 games out after just 24 games. On the bright side, it is a heck of a lot better to be this far out now then in August…
Maybe, just maybe, we can get hot on the road. I think it is possible. That is the great thing about sport, the unexpected happens all the time. With 22 weeks left in the season we would have to pickup just 1 game every 2 weeks and win the division! You never know.

Chris Young pitched brilliantly, but still lost 1-0 as the Giants swept my Padres in the short two game series. It was the 4th loss in a row and 8th L in the last 9 games. The Pads are in sole possesion of last place in the NL West and only the Washington Nationals have a worse record in all of the NL. It’s not much fun right now. It’ll just make winning that much sweeter…

Greg Maddux deserved his 350th win last night. He threw 7 shutout innings, allowing just 4 hits. But the offense and Trevor couldn’t deliver the knockout blow. It was another incredibly frustrating loss. (Yes, I still have faith in #51.)

Of course the D-backs miss Lincecum and Cain and we get both of them in a two game series. Sunday’s expected match-up of Peavy vs. Webb should be a dandy.
It’s a long season…
Let’s hope we start playing a lot better.

It’s a long season…
It’s a long season…
It’s a long season…
I keep trying to tell myself that. It’s a long season…
The Padres bullpen is officially hurting us more than our offense. I still have faith it will turn around. It’s a long season…
The offense has been better, but Tadahito Iguchi, Jim Edmonds, Scott Hairston, and Khalil Greene are really struggling. It’s a long season…
We are already 6.5 games behind the red-hot D-backs…but in the end it really is a long season. Those 6.5 games seems daunting now, but it is only one game per 3 weeks. 3 weeks! So it isn’t insurmountable by any means, but we have to start playing a lot better.
I sure hope A-Gon is not injured. He was amazing last night with both his hitting and his hustling. He scored the tying run with a barrel-roll at home plate in the 8th inning to cap a 4-run comeback. However, he was favoring his left shoulder…
The story of last night’s 11-7 loss at the Astros starts with our ‘pen which allowed 7 runs in two innings. Jake Peavy struggled through 6 innings, the umpire seemed to squeeze many of his pitches, but still only allowed 4 runs. But Joe Thatcher gave up 3 runs in the 7th, but that deficit was whiped out by the 8th inning runs. Then Heath Bell was blasted for 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th which was too much to overcome.
It’s a long season…
